Check up on Irrigation Systems

Don’t wait for the grass or shrub plantings to point out a poorly operating irrigation system.  By the time you notice dry spots some turf or ornamental plants may be lost.  With the dry seasons just ahead it’s time to check the watering system.

Irrigation System

Perhaps you haven’t operated the sprinklers for weeks or even months.  This is all the time it takes grass to cover a pop up sprinkler or a limb to block the flow of water from a mist head.  Turn the system on to determine where the trimming is needed.

Also check for heads that may have been damaged during mowing or while performing other landscape chores.  Check to make sure the sprinklers are rotating properly and watering the plants and not the sidewalks or roadways.  Some may need replacement and others adjustment.

With the sprinkler system checked out and operating properly  water only when needed.  Follow these tips to help conserve water in your landscape.

Water only when the spots in the lawn begin to curl their leaves or shrubs start to wilt.
Set the sprinklers to operate during the early morning hours.
Apply one half to three-quarters inch of water each time the system is operated
Maintain a mulch around trees and shrubs to help stretch the time between waterings
Where possible use drought tolerant plants that won’t need frequent irrigation.
