Have you noticed all those pretty little, low-growing, white, daisy-like flowers growing along the roadside lately? You may have even seen them right in your own back yard. There seems to be a lot more of them this year....in fact they're all over the place. They do 'appear' kind of pretty. But 'appear to be pretty' and 'are pretty' are two entirely different things. ........This one isn't nice at all.
It's fast growing and has the ability to re-grow more from its stems. So don't just mow it down.....that will not work.....you have to pull it up !
Now, as always with just about everything, it has a good side.
Spanish Needles provides a nectar source for butterflies and honey-bees. I'm not suggesting that you do this but......young leaves have been used in salads or cooked and people have said that it tastes 'similar' to spinach.
Some 'studies' indicate that this plant may be used as a remedy for cuts, swelling, hypertension, jaundice and diabetes. Other subspecies of it are being studied for further medicinal uses. Consequently..........this often- despised weed may some day prove to be of great benefit for us in the future.
