If you want a spectacular aerial display in your garden.....try growing sunflowers. They?re definitely flowers that you just have to look up to....as some can be as tall as 15ft! Not only are sunflowers that rich golden yellow we usually think of but they also can be in light and dark yellows, dark to bright oranges, shades of maroon, even brown and rose. Some types have just one single flower......while others can be single with smaller blooms coming from the main stem or some with large clusters of blooms just at the top. Not all varieties are super tall......other varieties can be small enough to grow a window box. Some types have blooms that are 12 inches across.
Sunflowers are one of the easiest plants to grow. What is especially good about them is they can be grown any time of the year here in Florida. Look for sunflower seeds at your favorite garden center. Start sunflower seeds in a good potting soil in a 4" - 6" pot and when the seedlings are about 6 inches high transplant them to a bright sunny area in your garden. They won?t mind the heat at all. Then when the flower buds start to show a little color.......it?s time to start new seedlings. This way you can keep your sunflowers blooming all year round.
A sunflower bloom will follow the sun as it moves across the sky but will face mostly east when the flowers are fully open and mature.
The bees will love you when the flowers begin to show and that?s a very good thing as they will help pollinate other plants nearby. The birds will love you too when then the seeds begin to mature. And as a side benefit you can enjoy them also. Not only are they tasty but they are nutritious being high in vitamins B1, A, D and F.
Your homework for today is to visit your favorite garden center and pick up a few packs of sunflower seeds in different colors......and maybe a small bag of good potting soil. Take them home......and give sunflowers a special place in your garden year round.
