Even though we do have a few nights below freezing, there will always be one flower that will be holding it's head high and saying......"Aren't you glad you planted me"? Amid all the brown, dead and dying plants pansies will give you that dash of color that will soothe a gardeners soul during the winter! They won't need to be brought inside either...... they thrive on cool temperatures. In fact when the temperatures start to warm up......that's when the pansies give up.
Pansies come in a full range of colors - white, yellow, pink, all shades of blue and purple even bi-colors, shaded and solids. They even come in a variety of flower sizes. Blooms range from 3" across to the tiny Johnny-jump-ups that produce flowers which are only 1 to 1 inches in diameter. Each comes fully equipped with a smiling face and ready to give you all they've got.
Pansies do well in a variety of ways.........hanging baskets, a nice large terra cotta bowl with a variety of colors placed on the patio. A balcony is a good place for a pansy display.
Of course pansies can also be planted in the ground. They will need full sun. In the cooler weather, it looks nice to scatter clusters of pansies here and there in your gardens so when a frost sneaks up on us........we'll still have color. If you are lucky enough to have window boxes in a sunny area, plant them with a collection of pansies.
